Bangladesh is not a country of just only natural beauty but also a country with historical monuments from forgotten eras. Sonargaon is one of those places that is considered as a eye catching historical place of Bangladesh. Sonargaon literally means “golden village” and it is situated near Narayanganj. It is considered as one of the first and oldest capitals of Bengal. It was the capital of the ancient kingdom ruled by Isa Khan of Bengal and now it is recognized as a famous tourist spot. Its iconic structures and layout constantly evoke its medieval roots. The single-domed mosque, Tomb of Munnah Shuah, Tomb of Ponakai Diwana, Panch Pir Dargah and the square mosque built by Sultan Shah are notably famous spot to visit in Sonargaon.
Panam City
The most attractive tourist spot of Sonargaon is panam city that is known as anabandoned city of the Hindu merchants. It was found at the beginning of 19th century during british rule in the sub-continent as a trading centre of cotton fabrics. In the panam city 52 houses on a single street was built by the Hindu merchants. A mixture of European style and traditional Bengali style can be observed in the houses of panam city. Some monumental structures include Dalalpur bridge, Panam bridge, and Panam nagar bridge. This was once the Hindu capital city of Sonargaon, though the ruins of the pre Muslim period can also be found today.
Sonargaon Museum
Sonargaon museum is considered as the main tourism center of Sonargaon. It includes Sonargan Folk Art Museum, Boro Sardar Bari Mansion, huge lakes, library, and a peacock shaped stage for folk programs. it was established in 1975. The entrance of the museum is ornamented with blue and white mosaics and eye pleasing displays that include wood, brass, metal crafts and also other ancient instruments that offer an insight into the history and culture of the most exotic part of the Bangladesh.
Neel kuthi
Another popular destination in Sonargaon to visit is "Neel kuthi". English East India Company built this and it was initially used for the cotton trading. The structure of Neel kuthi has a combination of Mughal and local decorative feature. The architectural design is a surviving example only through pictures as the original structure has almost vanished with time.
