Old Dhaka, also called by "Puran Dhaka" by the local residents, is one of the most earliest part of Dhaka city. The history says the old Dhaka was built on 7th century. It is located at the banks of the Buriganga river. In 1608 it was the capital of Mughal Bengal and was named as Jahangir Nagar. In this modern age the old Dhaka still holds its age old tradition and sense of community.
Due to little public transport infrastructure in the internal side of the old Dhaka, rickshaw is best option and very commonly used. The Sadarghat terminal is there from where people can travel from Dhaka city to other cities by river transport.
In Old Dhaka, there are no luxurious and comfortable hotel rather it has some cheap budget affordable hotels for the travelers from where a traveler can enjoy cultural and sightseeing views. Old Dhaka is popular to the Bangladeshi people, one of main reason is various dishes and food items of the Old Dhaka. A lot of traditional restaurants are there throughout the main roads and trademark narrow alleyways. Old Dhaka has a brand image for the biriyani restaurants it has. Bismillah Kabab, hajjee Biriyani are most famous among all the biriyani restuarents in Old Dhaka. There are Hotel Star also that is near to Shakhari bazaar famous for its goat leg roast, lacchi, faluda etc.
Old Dhaka is also famous for some historical sites. Ahsan Majzil is one of them that used to be a residence for the Nawab of Dhaka. it lies on the banks of the Buriganga River and is famous for its pink stonework. Recently it has been restored into a museum with different kinds of displays concerning its histoy. Lalbagh Fort is another historical site that was built in 1678 AD by prince Mohammad Azam, son of Mughal emperor Aurangazeb.
